Synopsis:
Noah, at the age of eight, lives with his mother in the housing estates of East Tampa when his absent father comes to visit him after two years of absence. After an argument and a slap from his mother, he leaves her to go to Swainsboro, Georgia with his father, and after about five months his father abandons him on the side of the road. He is picked up on the deserted rural road by a random greyhound bus driver who attempts to drive Noah back to his mother’s house in East Tampa but she rejects Noah by slamming the door in his face and, not knowing what else to do, he wanders for hours, ending up in Ybor City.
For six months, Noah lives on the rugged streets of this Cuban neighborhood in East Tampa and sleeps in a dumpster, eats from garbage cans behind restaurants and begs money from strangers. One day, a social worker finds him and offers him a home in an orphanage where Noah will spend the next nine years of his life until he graduates from high school and goes off to college. While in college, he goes through a painful breakup with his high school girlfriend and seeks help from an elderly retired psychiatrist who only gives him mind-altering drugs.
He considers killing himself but instead accidentally shoots and nearly kills his high school girlfriend and her father. Sentenced to fifteen years in prison, he was recruited as a dog boy in the prison’s canine squad to track down escaped prisoners at the risk of his life by shooting. After a few years of tracking down and capturing escapees, he is released on parole to complete his university studies where he continues his studies and obtains his degree. He went on to earn master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology to help others find God for many years in his own private practice, eventually earning a full pardon from the Governor (Lawton Chiles) of Florida in 1993.

You didn’t solicit my materials, but I’m just sharing my “incredible, compelling, and engaging” story that could earn someone associated with it an Oscar nomination if cast properly and marketed correctly. So, I know you’ll want more…everyone wants more from this story.
“A Stray Bullet” is an “astonishing, poignant and compelling” story of faith and hope, as well as a tragic story of redemption and forgiveness… (according to my detractors)

Cider House Rules (1999) meets Shawshank Redemption (1994) meets Good Will Hunting (1997). Much like Nights In Rodanthe (2008) except Howard Henderson is not Nicholas Sparks so no one dies and it has a triumphant happy ending, much more like Rudy (1993) given its triumphant happy ending.

Noah was eight years old when his father left him on a Georgia highway. The child waited alone for a Greyhound bus driver to find out. This brings him back to Florida, home and his mother. But Noah’s mother was living with a new boyfriend. Little boys were no longer welcome. Noah was left to survive on the streets of Tampa. Eventually picked up and sent to an orphanage, he never saw his mother or father again. One would expect an abandoned boy to become a bitter man. But Noah often exceeded expectations. At a time of year when we give thanks for the good in life, Noah is also grateful for the bad. “God watched over me, protected me, and gave me opportunities I never would have had if I had stayed with my parents,” Noah says.
Helping Patients
Today, he is a psychologist at Carmel, helping patients overcome their own disappointments. He is also a husband and father, providing for his three children with the stability he has never known. For nine years, Noah lived at the orphanage. There he learned to drive a car and play the trumpet. It was, he said, the first place he felt safe. At the end of their adolescence, the boys in the orphanage had to leave. Most joined the army. Noah wanted to go to college. The parents of two friends opened their home to him, which enabled him to complete his secondary education. It is while living with one of his new families that he meets the person who will become his mentor. Sherwin Broersma, pastor of a Dutch Reformed church in Tampa, became interested in an orphan child who needed a father figure. “He became a very strong role model, a guiding force in my life,” says Noah. “I still use a lot of the advice he gave me over the years in therapy with my patients.” After high school, Noah went to Florida State University, changing majors four times before going into psychology. He found he enjoyed helping others solve their problems. He was also working on himself. “I washed pots and pans in a Red Lobster over summer vacation. I was standing in the back scrubbing and thinking to myself, ‘I’m a good person and God loves me.’ “
Transcend adversity
Noah was a transcender, the rare child who can be hit by the worst in life and still thrive. We don’t fully understand why a child facing abuse and neglect soars while most around them sink. But Noah was blessed with three bright spots in an otherwise negative childhood. He lived in a well-run institution, where staff members were interested in him. He found a mentor. And, he developed a strong personal faith that gave him hope. “A big step for me was being able to forgive my parents for trying their best,” he says. In his Carmel practice, Dr. Kersey teaches common principles to people who overcome adversity. One is to commit to change. Another is to have faith in the process, to wait patiently for the transformation to occur. He also points out that anger and fear can be used as motivators for success. Yet success hasn’t erased Noah’s memories of a painful childhood. His biggest struggle, he says, is giving his children the freedom to fail, to not become overprotective of his own experiences. One of these painful experiences motivated Dr. Kersey to complete his studies. As a young man, he visited a woman he knew to ask for help finding a job. The woman, who a few years earlier had nearly adopted Noah, coldly pushed him away. “I left his house, stood in the driveway and said, ‘I’m going to show him,'” he says. Years later, after completing his doctorate, he sent the woman a thank you message. “The best revenge is to succeed despite the people who let you down,” he says.
