Distance Learning – Post Graduate Online Education Degrees
According to the Survey of Earned Doctorates, as of 2004, there was a 3.4 percent increase in doctoral degrees awarded in the United States. In June 2004, a total of 41,155 research doctorates were obtained by postgraduate students. The recent increase in doctoral degrees awarded after a decade of decline can be partially attributed to the convenience of online postgraduate distance education degrees.
Postgraduate programs offer students the opportunity to explore a subject to achieve the highest levels of proficiency in that field of study. Courses can be based on a curriculum or on independent study and research. A recent study published by Penn State University Outreach Marketing and Communications and the University Continuing Education Association found that distance education is expected to grow ten times faster than on-campus education over the next ten years. Additionally, approximately 45% of college enrollments are mature students who often prefer distance learning opportunities to on-campus classes. Sun President Scott McNealy says, “Technology has to play a huge role in education. (It has) changed commerce…publishing…banking. It has to change education fundamentally.” .”
Online postgraduate distance learning degrees offer busy students the opportunity to earn doctoral degrees at their convenience, without having to travel and attend traditional courses. By the time students intend to pursue higher education online remotely, they are usually computer literate, self-motivated, and able to manage their time well. These are all essential elements for success in virtual classrooms. The two main types of postgraduate degrees that students can obtain are professional doctorates or research doctorates.
Professional doctorates. The United States requires terminal professional doctorate degrees in certain fields, such as dentistry, medicine, law, chiropractic, occupational therapy, and psychology. Before entering these professional doctoral programs, students must earn a bachelor’s degree, preferably in a related field. Professional doctoral degrees, such as JD and MD, generally do not require students to write a thesis, although some do require the submission of an original research paper. Doctoral degrees generally take three years after post-secondary education, although online postgraduate distance education degrees can be completed more quickly. Since online education courses are often geared towards busy adult learners, students can progress at their own pace.
Research doctorates. The most commonly obtained research doctorate is a doctorate. The time it takes to complete research doctoral programs can vary greatly, depending on the course taken. It is common for students to take two to three years to complete their courses and three or more years to conduct relevant research. The advantage of a doctorate. is that a holder is qualified to pursue an academic career as an expert in their field. Distance research doctoral degrees are easily pursued online and can be easily worked around professional schedules.
Honorary doctorates. These degrees may be awarded for substantial contributions to a field and are not necessarily academic.
Financial aid. Federal financial aid and loan programs can be applied to online postgraduate distance education degrees. Employers may offer tuition reimbursement for courses. Private loans can also be secured to pay for higher education. Students have several options available that can help them fund their PhDs.
Thesis. Some postgraduate doctoral degrees require students to write a thesis. The learner defines his own area of research and takes years to write a detailed article, which can be made available to other students in the field as relevant information.
Course. Online postgraduate distance education programs provide students with ongoing guidance through lectures, emails, virtual lectures, and online discussions. Students should, however, work independently and use a variety of research resources to meet the requirements of their course.
Online students. A recent nationwide study titled Degrees of Opportunity revealed some interesting facts about online students. Eighty-nine percent of respondents felt that the benefits of higher education are equal to or even greater than the money, time and effort involved. Lyungai Mbilinyi, Ph.D and author of this report, said, “Eighty-one percent associated higher education with a sense of personal accomplishment and seventy-eight percent believed that education would better develop their talents or pursue their interests. Despite the assortment of obstacles that many adults face when considering returning to school, the vast majority believe the resulting benefits have been worth it.” Finally, eighty-four for percent of enrollment in higher education programs are non-traditional students such as distance learners and employed adults.Students who participate in online postgraduate distance learning programs not only seek better positions, but also the increased knowledge and self-esteem that comes with advanced training.
The study “Growing by Degrees: Online Education in the United States, 2005” found that online graduate distance education programs were offered by 38% of schools. The popularity of postgraduate online degree programs clearly shows that they are a viable way to pursue higher education and improve career options.
