Popular Mystery Writers – Edgar Award Winners of the 21st Century
Let me first explain that the Edgars, named after Edgar Allan Poe, are awarded by a vote of the members of The Mystery Writers of America. The awards have changed over the years and there may be as many as twenty awarded in any given year. Small Poe statues are not just for book writers, but include writers of television scripts, plays, short stories, a work of non-fiction or true crime, a biographical or critical study in the field of mystery, as well as works aimed at the juvenile and young adult audience.
But I want to focus on the three areas that mystery readers are most interested in: best novel, best first novel, and best original paperback from the years 2000 to 2011. My mind goes to analysis, so here are some facts interesting. Seventeen winning titles belong to a mystery series and nineteen are stand-alone novels. Thirteen winners are women and twenty-three are men. Two of the men have twice won Best Novel: John Hart (2008 and 2010) and T. Jefferson Parker (2002 and 2005).
I consider myself a pretty avid mystery reader. However, there are only a few authors, all of whom write series, that I recognize. These include CJ Box (2009), Jan Burke (2000), Jonathon King (2003), Ian Rankin (2004), and SJ Rozan (2003). All won the Edgar for Best Novel except King, who won Best First Novel.
So if you find that many of the series you’ve read are becoming predictable, or if you want to add a few “new” authors to your treasure chest, look no further. Here are the other Best Novel winners chosen by writers who should recognize a good book when they read one. Without counting those already mentioned, they are: Jason Goodwin (2007), Steve Hamilton (2011), Joe R. Lansdale (2001) and Jess Walter (2006). The annual winners for best first novel from the year 2000 are Alex Berenson, Bruce DeSilva, David Ellis, Tana French, Jonathon King, Don Lee, Francie Lin, David Liss, Eliot Pattison, Rebecca Pawel, Stefanie Pintoff and Theresa Schwegel .
I think I’ll leave the best original paperback winners for another time. But feel free to research them yourself on the Mystery Writers of America website. Many of these writers have written both standalone series and mystery series. Due to their status as Edgar winners and their relatively current release dates, you have no excuse. Go ahead and treat yourself to some new talent. You’ll find that although new to you, many of these mystery writers have been trying to get your attention for years.
