Grandma Shops For Toys For Christmas 2009
Toys have always been a love of mine. When I was little, I was thrilled with the mystery and surprise of receiving a new toy. Later, with my own children, I was able to visit the world of toys again. I even considered owning a toy store.
Christmas is approaching again and many of us are combing through stores, scratching our heads or searching online for toys to buy. I now have five wonderful grandchildren. They are aged from five months to six years. I’m excited to look for toys for them. For the past two years, I’ve done this research almost exclusively online. I find there is a lot of information on the toys available and the prices are excellent.
For the babies on my list, I’m considering:
Hasbro Playskool Busy Ball Popper – This toy was at my granddaughter’s daycare and all the toddlers loved it. They loved putting the balls in the spiral track and they never seemed to get tired of the balls coming off the top. I don’t know if any of them understood why the bullets were coming out, but it produced lots of laughs and fun.
LeapFrog Learn & Groove Musical Table – One of the advantages of this musical table is that baby can play with it if it is flat on the ground. Then, when it starts to sit up, baby can stand on it and press the different activity buttons for sounds and music. I like this toy because it is suitable for children from 6 months to 3 years old.
Fisher-Price Rainforest Jumperoo – Nothing baby likes better than jumping. Once a baby is able to hold their head up well, this is a great toy to try out those legs without putting weight on them. There are toys all around. Some of them will make sounds when the baby jumps. Others are great for grabbing or hitting. The seat swivels 360 degrees. It is very portable and stores easily.
Fisher-Price Amazing Animals Sing and Go Choo-Choo – It’s a cute train. It is suitable for crawling babies. One of the wonderful things about it is that there are no tracks from which the train will fall. The colors of the train and the animals are magnificent. By placing one of the animals in the motor, baby will get a song. The train lights up, plays music and makes sounds.
For the toddlers on my list, I’m looking at:
Fisher-Price Go Baby Go! Bounce and Spin Zebra – It comes in the form of a zebra or a pony. It is ideal for toddlers who can climb on it and swing around. It is low to the ground so any spills will not harm the child. In addition to rocking, the child can turn on it. It helps with balance and early coordination. It’s a fun toy.
LeapFrog Fridge Farm Magnetic Animal Set – This magnetic game can be placed on any metal surface like the refrigerator at the best height for baby. Animals are large enough not to present a choking hazard. At first, baby will be happy to press the buttons to activate the sounds. As baby grows and matures a bit, he will begin to match animal body parts and assimilate animal to sounds. Even if they don’t match them, they get a silly name for the animal. It’s portable so kids can play with it on the floor away from dinner preparations.
Melissa and Doug Deluxe Floor Easel – I think an easel is a necessary part of every child’s life. Once a child can stand and hold a pencil, an easel will provide hours of entertainment and creativity. This particular easel is sturdy and allows for paint, chalk, crayons and dry erase.
Fisher-Price Musical Tea Set – This is a set of darling game dishes in beautiful pastel colors. What child doesn’t want to imitate the adults in their life and serve them food? Constructed of sturdy plastic, it will stand up to those occasions when the tea falls out of little hands. The teapot is darling and plays “I am a little teapot”.
Tonka’s most powerful truck – Kids need trucks in their lives and no one makes them better than Tonka. I’m sure we had that same truck when our kids were young. It’s sturdy and stands up to a lot of abuse. We’ve always limited these big Tonka toys to the outdoors, but they can be used indoors with supervision.
For the four- to five-year-olds on my list, I’m considering:
LeapFrog Text and Learning – At this age, children want to do everything adults do in their lives. With everyone running around with Blackberries and I Phones, it gives this age group their own portable device. It also allows them to start exploring words and spelling.
LEGO Duplo 5380 building set – Like Tonka, Lego has survived and improved over the decades. It remains a favorite with both boys and girls. One of the benefits of buying Lego is that you can add more for a birthday or next Christmas.
Fisher-Price Kid-Tough Digital Camera – Again, just like mom and dad, kids love to take their own photos. They don’t care about composition, they just stand out. They are happy to have their photos uploaded to the computer along with everyone else’s photos. These cameras are nearly indestructible and reasonably waterproof. A kindergarten teacher uses them in her classroom and the kids love them.
Baby Alive learns to defecate – This doll has the most huge and attractive blue eyes. She eats, she pees and she poops. She also talks and has lines like “oh oh I made a stink” that make the kids laugh. It is possible to present it before the age of four when the children are themselves trained. At an earlier age, the child who plays with it needs supervision. She is lovely.
Barbie and the Three Musketeers – After 50 years, Barbie is still a highly sought after item. The Barbie and the Three Musketeers series of dolls and accessories is this year’s release. The concept is built around the theory that girls can do anything they want – even become musketeers! In addition to the dolls, there is a magic castle and a horse-drawn carriage. What fairy tale would be complete without them?
For our six to eight year olds, my list includes;
Transformers – These articulated figurines which are also three-dimensional puzzles delight the boys who own them. Even little boys with no knowledge of comics or movies are entertained with their own adventures. The most sold are Optimus Prime, Ultimate Bumblebee, Devastator and Megatron.
Bakugan 7 in 1 Maxus Dragonoid – While adults scratch their heads in wonder, little boys engage with these marble spheres. It is an extension of the Japanese game Bakugan in which warriors fight against each other. I think the fascinating thing about these magnetic marble like warriors is that little boys who have no knowledge of strategy game can invent their own way to play with them. I like this game because it will last as players get older and become more interested in learning the game.
Mind games – Without a doubt, this is the best-selling game this year. Since its introduction earlier this year, it has intrigued gamers looking for something other than mind games. This out-of-the-future game has players wearing sensors and through their abilities focusing on controlling fan speeds in the console. Many customers who have purchased it before report an increased ability to concentrate in their children. It is recommended from 8 years old.
Nintendo DS Lite – This video game system is ideal for quiet moments and for travel. There seem to be endless games that can be played on it. It has the ability to connect wirelessly so players can pit their skills against others all over the world. One of the very popular applications for this handheld device is the Mario Kart DS.
LeapFrog Tag Reading System – I see my grandchildren in this age range really interested in learning to read on their own. This is another great product from LeapFrog to help them do just that. This system has won many awards for the more than 17 learning activities it has.
Here are some of my picks that I think fit the criteria of durability, durability, and fun.
