A Simple Method to Relieve GERD Sufferers – Practice Food Combining

According to an internet article I read recently, GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease (years ago it was just called heartburn) affects 44% of American adults at least once a month. This statistic seems realistic to me based on the number of hands I see in the air at my lectures when I ask attendees to raise their hands if they have GERD, acid reflux, or heartburn.

The amount of money spent on prescription and over-the-counter medications to get relief from GERD is staggering. The number of advertisements seen on television for these products is also incredible. that’s a lot of money for the advertising and drug industries.

Common over-the-counter products include: Tums, Pepto Bismol, and the myriad of other antacids, tablets, and liquids, as well as simple enzymes from pineapple (bromelain) and other sources. Popular prescription medications for GERD include: Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium, Tagamet (I think several of these are so commonly used that they are now available over the counter), Zantac and Pepcid.

As with any chronic irritation, persistent problems with GERD, acid reflux, indigestion, or heartburn can lead to serious health issues, including cancer.

A long, long time ago, on a planet far, far, far away, before I went raw, I suffered terribly from GERD, which at the time was called heartburn or acid reflux. Sometimes the pain was so bad that my doctor sent me home with an aerosol can of benzocaine, I think it was – maybe it was novocaine? Anyway, it was an aerosol can that could be sprayed directly into my throat to numb it and ease the pain. I put the can in the trunk of my car and then decided I had to do something else, that was definitely the wrong path I was on. I was 44 years old. I have never used this canister. Instead, I started my raw food journey.

If you suffer from GERD, acid reflux or heartburn, or know someone who suffers from GERD, et al, (especially if they are an SAD* eater), please listen – because for many people with this problem, there is a simple solution. (*Standard US Diet)

NOTE: I am not a doctor. I’m sure there are people for whom this solution won’t work. I’m sure there are people who really really need the drugs I listed. I’m speaking from personal experience, not only as a long-term raw consumer, and it may work for non-raw consumers as well, but also as someone who understands food combining theories.

Reducing the amount of acid-forming foods eaten helps many people with GERD, but not all. Eating a balanced and varied diet consisting of all or mostly raw foods is an alkalizing diet and that alone can help many people.

The rest of the story is about the food combination. If you are not a raw food, never plan to be a raw food, or know someone who is not a raw food and never intends to be a raw food, but who suffers from GERD, et al, try combining foods. This means no longer eating your meals the way your mom served them.

Why? Proteins and carbohydrates (starch) need very different times to digest as well as completely different types of enzymes to digest them. So when you eat steak and potatoes at the same time, your digestive tract has a huge conflict. Nothing actually digests properly or well, resulting in, you guessed it: GERD, acid reflux, heartburn, indigestion, and incomplete digestion, including or possibly contributing to what some people refer to as leaky gut.

The fix for the standard American diet eater or mostly cooked and processed food eater (I’ll come back to this information for the raw food eater later):

Look at your typical plate of food. What is traditionally on it?

Let’s call it The Big Three of the plate:

a. proteins such as steak, chicken, hamburger, tuna, etc.

b. starch such as mashed potatoes, rice, fries, pasta, this category includes bread.

vs. vegetables like carrots, green beans, asparagus, including salad.

When I was growing up, and I think it’s still true in many homes today, every responsible mother in their right mind served the big three on the plate: meat, vegetables, and starches.

Do you want to feel better? Forget how mom served your meal, eat like this instead, let’s call it the delicious lunch and dinner plate duo:

First choice: steak, chicken, lamb, etc. with vegetables, including salad. NO bread, NO potato, NO rice. On a completely different meal that’s at least four hours apart, try this:

Second choice: a starchy food such as rice, potatoes, baked yams or pasta with vegetables, including salad.

Plus the big three on the plate, you are now consuming the delicious duo of the lunch and dinner plate. A few more examples (and yes, my friend, you’re going to have to learn what a protein is and what a carb is for this to work.)

Note for raw food lovers: you can help your friends and loved ones with digestive issues more with this information than just about any other, once they try it and get used to it. feel better, maybe they could listen to you about something else.

Example of combined food meals to avoid acid reflux:

1. Eggs, bacon, sliced ​​tomatoes, fruit (no toast, no potato)

I don’t personally know of any raw food eaters who suffer from GERD. It became apparent that food combining principles are less important when eating raw. This is likely due to the many enzymes available or when the body adapts to all raw or highly raw foods, the relative ease of digestion of raw rather than cooked and processed foods. However, it’s always a good idea to separate protein and starch and most raw foodies try to separate fruits and vegetables when possible. Remember that if it has a seed, it is a fruit, so cucumbers, zucchini, squash, tomatoes, etc. are all fruits when you think about your meals.

Eating yams and nuts at the same meal would put a strain on the digestive system and lead to incomplete digestion.
