How Is A 91 Years Old Veteran Still Healthy Mentally And Physically?
Mr. Woolfgang was born in the Boston area. He joined the army after World War II when he was 17. His job was to drive visiting Japanese scientists right after the occupation of Japan by the United States of America. He was so brave that he didn’t even carry a weapon. He served for a year just after World War II, then returned to Boston College to complete his engineering degree for free. After graduating from Boston College, he joined the US Air Force and flew jets and commercial aircraft for over 15 years. He never had depression, anxiety or panic attacks. He drank two cups of coffee during the day and was able to stay calm even when he had to jump out of the plane in Rhode Island once after the plane’s engine had trouble. When he first exited the plane, his parachute did not open. He remained very calm, followed parachute procedure and successfully landed in the Atlantic Ocean. Later, he told his acupuncturist that he hadn’t had any coffee that morning, which made him even calmer. He wasn’t a very healthy eater when he was young, but he never indulged in anything because of his military training. He goes to bed early and gets up early. He likes a diet high in salt and sugar and his two cups of coffee in the morning. He was healthy until he was 80 years old.
At the age of 80, he was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AF) and osteoarthritis at Newton Wellesley Hospital. Her cardiologist prescribed her a beta-blocker, blood thinner and blood pressure medication as routine treatment for AF. He took the drugs for a few months; her heart rate became slower but still irregular. He gradually noticed that his right knee pain got worse and both his hands became more swollen. His hands were less swollen in the morning before he started taking the medication. Her fingers couldn’t straighten out in the late afternoon, due to swelling in the joints of her hands. Once, while waiting for his arthritis specialist at Needham Clinic, one of the patients in the waiting room recommended he see an acupuncturist in Needham. He was an open-minded driver and always ready to try something new. Although he lives far from Needham in downtown Boston, he was determined to reduce his knee pain and maintain his good health so he could care for his wife and serve his church.
He started acupuncture at the age of 80 to reduce his right knee pain. He has been coming to our clinic in Needham 10 times a week and his knee pain has improved a lot. He only had aches when going up and down the stairs. Then her acupuncturist in Needham decided to help her with AF with her once a month acupuncture visit to Needham. He was told to reduce his coffee to one cup or decaffeinated coffee. At first, he said his cardiologist didn’t think the AF was related to coffee. Her acupuncturist gave her two choices: continue drinking coffee and then permanently install a pacemaker with blood thinners or change her habits and avoid the pacemaker. Mr Woolfgan decided to change and started drinking decaffeinated coffee at the age of 87. After a few months of acupuncture treatment at Needham his heart rate became very regular and dropped to 50. When he returned to see his cardiologist at Newton Wellesley Hospital he was told he could stop his blood thinner and reduce its beta-blocker. half dose so his heart rate can stay between 60 and 70. His cardiologist told Mr. Woofgan that he was the only patient who was able to come off the blood thinner in his more than 30 years of practice. Mr Woolfgan noticed that once he reduced his beta-blocker, his hand swelled much less. He was able to grip his golf club much better and his level of wrist pain was significantly reduced.
At the age of 86, Mr Woolfgan decided to have knee replacement surgery even though he had no pain in his knee, only stiffness when walking up and down stairs. Her orthopedic surgeon at Boston Medical Center told her that her artificial knee would allow her to walk better. Her acupuncturist in Needham told her that if you don’t have knee pain and are able to walk without pain, please don’t have knee surgery. He was a firm believer in his famous Boston orthopedic surgeon and had knee surgery at the age of 87. After his knee surgery, his right knee was swollen like a balloon and was at an angle he could barely bend. Her orthopedic surgeon had to inject anesthetic, then two nurses had to hold her leg to straighten her right knee. The pain was excruciating during the procedure and he nearly passed out. The angle of his right knee was reduced after this painful procedure, and his brain became super sensitive to any kind of pain after this brutal procedure. However, because he is a tough man, he continued his acupuncture treatment at Needham and went to the gym every day to exercise his leg muscles. The knee pain eventually went away, but the right knee still can’t fully straighten. When his acupuncturist asked him if he wanted to have another left knee replacement, the answer was no.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr Woolfgan and his wife were locked in their self-contained accommodation in downtown Boston, so he stopped acupuncture treatment at Needham for three months. As soon as the confinement order was released, he returned to his once-a-month acupuncture treatment. Now that he is almost 92 years old, he still has a good memory and can walk without a cane. He’s six-foot-four and hasn’t shrunk an inch. Recently, he developed dizziness from getting up too quickly or singing in church. Her acupuncturist told her to ask her cardiologist in Boston to adjust her medication. He further reduced his beta-blocker and his dizziness disappeared. Slight changes he made when he hit his 90s sometimes included going back to his usual cafe. His heart rate remained around 60, but the irregular heartbeats returned whenever he drank regular coffee. His acupuncturist can always tell if he drank decaffeinated or regular coffee. He also started drinking tea and more water because he had two surgeries to remove a malignant tumor from his bladder. His acupuncturist told him that if he didn’t want to have a third bladder surgery, he would have to drink more water to clean his bladder.
In this case, Mr Woolfgan was able to change his 80-year-old habit of drinking coffee regularly, which could have led to his need for a pacemaker. Surgery is always risky because when you cut a 90-year-old’s skin and muscle, their immune function will be compromised, so they can develop various other diseases. Our 91-year-old veteran was very disciplined and was able to exercise and sleep regularly. That is why he is healthy mentally and physically. Additionally, Mr Woolfgan still has fairly good vision without macular degeneration or glaucoma at his age as he has never been a fan of eating too many nuts and spicy foods, and he has reduced his salt and sugar intake. after her acupuncturist recommended that she do so. .
