2006 Lung Cancer Stats for California – Good News or Bad?
The California Cancer Registry and American Cancer
Society has just published a new pamphlet “California Cancer
Facts and Figures, 2006″. For those of you who live in California
with any form of cancer, I invite you to get this information
brochure.
For this report, I will focus only on Lung statistics
Cancer in California. California is a tobacco tax leader
initiatives. Tracking Cancer Trends in California
determine what steps the rest of the country needs to take to
decrease lung cancer rates overall.
Good news! – Basically
In short, the news is very good. From the period of 1988 –
2002, all types of cancer incidences in California went
down 12%. Cancer mortality decreased by 19%. Thanks to
Proposition 99 – California’s Tobacco Control Initiative
passed in 1988, tobacco-related cancers fell sharply,
far more than any other state. Tobacco-related cancers
include cancers of the lung, larynx, mouth, pancreas,
stomach and bladder. However, lung cancer still causes
more deaths than any other cancer.
What about new cases?
Of all Californians alive today, about 15 million will eventually get some form of cancer, or about two in five.
Over the years, cancer will strike approximately three out of
four families. This year alone there will be more than 15 new
cases diagnosed every hour of every day. For men, of all
new cases diagnosed, 13% of them will have lung cancer.
For women, this number is 12%.
Tobacco-related cancers
Currently, about 85% of lung cancers are caused by cigarettes
smoking. However, many other cancers are caused by
tobacco too. Overall, one in three cancer deaths is
because of tobacco. Lung cancer incidence decreased by
26% in the period mentioned above. Needless to say, for
those smokers who quit, your chances of
lung cancer decreases over time. After 15 years, the
the risk is only slightly higher than in people who have
never smoked.
Secondhand smoke
I think we all know by now that secondhand smoke has been
determined to cause cancer in humans. But did you know that
each year in the United States, approximately 3,000 adult non-smokers die from
lung cancer directly from second-hand smoke? the
the most recent high profile example is Dana Reeve, wife of
Christopher Reave. We think she may have contracted it
second-hand smoke due to his years as a
animator in music clubs.
Second-hand smoke is particularly harmful to children. the
the good news is that in 2004, more than 80% of California
households with children under 5 completely stopped
smoke at home.
Alarming trends in smoking
Since lung cancer rates in California have plummeted
significantly, it would be logical to assume that smoking
rates have also come down, haven’t they? And in fact they have,
in most adults and adolescents. In 2004, 15% of California
adults still smoked.
The alarming trend is the increase in the number of smokers between the ages of 18 and 24.
They are the fastest growing rate of smokers in California and
tobacco companies refer to them as “smokers of
the future “. The smoking rate among 18-24 year olds was 18% in
2004.
What can be done?
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in California. All
cancers caused by tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption can be
completely prevented. In 2006, 18,000 Californians will die
due to tobacco consumption.
Early diagnosis can save lives by identifying cancer the moment it is
at the curable stage. The five-year survival rate for most
cancers is very good if caught early. Unfortunately, the
lung cancer statistics are not so good, mainly because it is
difficult to diagnose early enough.
The California Tobacco Control Initiative has helped put a
lower lung cancer rate. Californians must stay
informed and aware. More cigarette tax legislation is on the way
way.
