Finding the Perfect RV – Part One – What Kind of Camper Are You?

Are you a full time, seasonal, weekend?

This is part of a series of articles in my Perfect RV series. Each article describes an aspect of finding the perfect RV for you right now. Your needs will change as you grow in RV. Over time, you will need more or less space to sleep, your amenities will change, your means of transport will change and your desires will change. This is the first article in the series.

Full-time stationary

By a loose definition, full time is considered living in their RV or recreational vehicle as their home. Many people choose to live in recreational vehicles as a less expensive way of life. Their recreational vehicle is stationary and rarely moves.

There are many advantages to living in a motorhome. Tasks around the house take less time, costs are lower, maintenance is lower, and the cost of ownership is lower. RV owners have the same tax advantages as owners or what we call stick and brick owners.

For 12 years we were full time stationary campers. We lived and worked from our RV or held full time jobs in the local community. Daisy was a legal secretary and I was a database administrator for Nokia with responsibilities for a global SQL Server network. You had sold our house and the recreational vehicle became our house. With an income of over $100,000 a year, I don’t think we qualify as trailer trash. In fact, we met many people who were professionals who had decided to live this lifestyle, including lawyers and doctors.

Full time traveler

The common thought when people say they are full time is someone traveling across the country living full time in an RV. These folks have all the benefits of stationary RV owners and the freedom to move when and where they want.

There are additional costs to traveling full time and that is the cost of fuel and maintenance. Many full-time workers who travel also tend to stay in one place for several weeks or even months before leaving. You are now full time travelers, starting our new trip in June 2014. We spend about 3 weeks per location then move to a new campground when our time is up. Last winter we spent in Florida moving every two weeks. It was the nicest winter I’ve ever had.

snow birds

A snowbird is a person who travels to warmer temperatures in winter and cooler in summer. They can have a home in both places, live in an RV in one and a house in the other, or stay in an RV year-round. Many retirees are snow birds traveling to Florida during the winter months.

Seasonal

Seasonal campers are generally people who are still working but enjoy the camping lifestyle and have an RV placed at a campground full time, but only use it on weekends or holidays. They may or may not use it for holidays. They are considered seasonal because they pay for the land for the camping season. The camping season will vary depending on where you are in the country. In the northeast, it can be from March to the end of October. Some campgrounds may have two or more seasons with different rates. For example, winter and summer rates, like in Florida.

Weekends

Weekend campers are campers who pack up the RV and hit the road, usually Friday afternoon, head to a local campground and camp for the weekend. Come Sunday, they pack up and go home. These people are still likely to work full time and are not ready to pack their bags and leave the world of work for an extended period.

finance

Whether you work full time or are retired, finances will be a big factor in getting your RV. Financing an RV will be easier if you are working, however, there are places that will also work with the retiree. But from a basic business perspective, someone with disposable income will find it easier to get financing than others.

Other funding considerations will be your budget. Your income to expense ratio will determine how often you can go camping or if you plan to travel, how long you can travel, and what you can see and do while traveling.

Many people, young and old, travel full time and also have one or more jobs. You know couples who would now be considered snowbirds and who work year-round as camping hosts. You have other friends who run businesses out of their RVs and still others who trade camping fees for a few hours a week of work at the campsite (workampers). Earning income is possible while you are on the road. Earning a comfortable living, however, might be another story.

As you can see, there are a lot of things you need to consider when looking at an RV. In many ways, it’s like buying a house. You will live there for a while and may need the same amenities as in your house or apartment. Understanding how you will use the RV and what you already have that can help you tow it will help you keep your expenses and expectations in line. In the next article, I will discuss the different types of recreational vehicles.
