DUTY AND HEROISM: The Diva Syndrome

I would like to talk about something I call “the Diva Syndrome”. Diva Syndrome is basically a need to define everything in its best terms, whether it deserves it or not. What do I mean by that? The term “diva” actually means “an exceptionally talented singer”. In Italian, it basically means “a goddess”.

By this definition, I would consider the following singers to be “divas”: Barbara Streisand, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Etta James, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Cher, and most likely Madonna. Now, there are many more who belong to this list, but I try to show the caliber of singers who hold this lofty designation. They represent the best of the best. Nikki Minaj a diva? No. Miley Cyrus? No never! Maybe Pink… someday. Probably Mariah Carey… soon. Etc.

The point to make is that we started throwing around words that represent the highest standards of performance or ideals and applied them to less than exemplary people. That’s not to say that some people don’t deserve to be recognized for their value, but applying terms like “diva” or “hero” to anyone diminishes the value of the term. It’s like last place trophies. If everyone gets a trophy for their participation, what is the value of a first place trophy. Much less, I dare say.

Today, in pathetic attempts to appear patriotic or socially sensitive, people (and especially the news media) are throwing around the word “hero” as if true heroism is commonplace and I assure you it’s not not the case. True heroism involves a willingness to sacrifice one’s own life to save others. To be a hero is to exhibit moral excellence in the face of corruption and deceit without regard to one’s own comfort and safety. Yet today the world is full of pseudo-heroes. Proclaimed by those who benefit or see their own cause elevated because they identify with those they have proclaimed as such.

Today we proclaim the members of our army as “heroes”. Let me be clear on one thing, I respect and support the men and women of the armed forces, but I cannot support the general use of the term “hero” without lowering my regard for those who sacrificed their lives to save others. Members of the armed forces are paid for doing a job and they do it well, no doubt. But at the end of the day, it’s still work, and my concept of heroes doesn’t include those who show up for work. The same goes for police, firefighters and paramedics. This certainly does not include medical personnel who are very well paid to save lives. It is their job and we expect them to do it. If so, then a fast food fry cook is just as much a hero as a soldier because he too shows up and does his job. There is no difference. Can a soldier be killed? Likewise, a fry cook can do this, but if that lowly fry cook foils a robbery attempt and in the process is shot, possibly killed. Then he became a hero.

Being a hero should not be confused with duty. Duty is your obligation to do your job or fulfill your responsibilities. Doing your duty is expected. You are not rewarded for this except that you may earn a salary or be acclaimed for your franchise. A soldier is paid to do a job. Doing this work is their duty. If it means being put in danger, then it is their duty to do so. Being a hero means going above and beyond. Do what most others wouldn’t dare to do.

I had the privilege of meeting a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient at a reception a few years ago. This individual, a helicopter medical pilot, was responsible for saving the lives of nearly a dozen soldiers caught in a shooting in Vietnam. Unconcerned for his own safety, he picked up wounded soldiers from a clearing while taking hundreds of bullets in his helicopter. When other helicopters didn’t dare return to the area to pick up other trapped soldiers, he continued to retreat. He got them all back. His helicopter was so shot down that he was unable to make another trip. He took six.50 cal. bullets in the legs, arms and chest in flight. He had nothing to do with all that. In fact, he was ordered back to the base but he refused to let these trapped soldiers. This is a case of extreme heroism. Calling all soldiers heroes diminishes the term reserved for men like this helicopter pilot.

Duty is an obligation to fulfill a responsibility or an oath. Heroism is going “beyond the call of duty”. The list of great heroes in history is long and impressive. Great leaders, politicians, activists, and inventors of all types can claim the title. But more than the big names in history, it is the unsung everyday heroes who most deserve our admiration. The ordinary person who rises to the occasion not out of duty but out of love and compassion for his fellow man.

The best example I can think of is Rachael Beckwith who wanted to raise $300 before her ninth birthday to help bring clean water to people in poor countries. Tragically, she was killed in a car accident in 2011, $80.00 short of her goal just after turning 9. His cause and his death inspired countless others to join the fundraising effort to provide clean water to impoverished areas around the world. Today, through her efforts, charity:water has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and brought clean water to villages like the Bayaka tribe in the Central African Republic.

Upon hearing that people didn’t have clean water to drink, the 9-year-old said, “I don’t want a birthday party, I don’t want presents, I just want people to have drinking water”. It’s the voice of a true hero. A little girl who marked the lives of those she didn’t even know.
