Aboveground Pool Cover Dilemma! What is the Best Winter Cover?
Are you preparing to close your new swimming pool for the winter? There are differences between an above ground pool cover and an inground pool and there are different cover considerations. Read on to find out how to avoid damaging your pool and enjoy worry-free winter storage and summer opening. I was new to “pool maintenance and safety” just a few years ago as well. I’ve spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out the techniques, so hopefully I can save you some time and let you in on some pool cover secrets.
Here are the five things to consider
1. Pool design is important. Above-ground pools and in-ground pools have obvious differences. An above ground pool is freestanding, normally shallower and all drains are exposed, which contrasts with an in-ground pool configuration. Both pool designs require you to leave water in there during the winter. With an above ground pool this is more important as your sides can collapse with too little water.
Now let’s add the weight of an above ground pool cover. Suppose you have the water drained halfway (way too low in my opinion). You then attach the pool cover and secure on all sides. Now the rains are coming, your cover is filling with water, the pressure is pulling from the upper sides in all directions and your pool is collapsing. Bad scene. So consider the design and size of your pool. Drain the water just below the skimmer. Buy an above ground pool cover that is larger than your pool area because it needs to rest (float) on the remaining water in the pool. That way, when the rains come, you’ve left enough slack in the pool cover to catch the rain and not put pressure on the attached sides of your pool.
2. Water levels. We have covered them above. The best rule of thumb is to drain your water just below your skimmer opening. This way you can remove the piping and store it away from the cold. You can drip a little more if you want but not too much. Remember it will be warm and sunny in the spring, you’ll have to fill the pool and (in my area) water costs money, so I’m careful what I waste.
3. What type of above ground pool cover should I use? It mainly depends on the time of year and a bit on your personal preferences. I use a heavy duty above ground pool cover year round because I like the added benefit of keeping my heat in and reducing evaporation. I find that my water heater works less if I cover my pool, even in the summer after daily use.
I am unique in my neighborhood in this winter, I do not use a winter cover for an above ground pool but rather leave my pool open. I fill the water, put on the chemicals and enjoy the beauty of the pool all winter long. I clean it about once a month and it keeps circulating. Many pool owners will have an above ground pool solar cover for the summer that is lightweight but strong and easily removable. Then they have a heavy duty above ground pool winter cover to seal off the pool in the winter.
4. Does an above ground pool cover add to safety? You bet yes. There are above ground pool winter covers that attach and secure to all sides of your pool. Once in place, an adult can walk on it without sinking into the water. This provides great peace of mind for anyone worried about children or pets entering the pool.
5. Repair and maintain this above ground pool cover. Mary just asked, “I have a 2ft tear along a seam in the tarp. Any ideas on how to fix this so it won’t tear again?”
Here is what we offer. Most pool supply stores carry a band specifically designed for this purpose. Make sure both sides are dry and clean and apply tape. It’s even stronger than duct tape, which eventually breaks down due to chemicals. Of course, don’t forget the proper installation of the cover, resting on the water below, so as not to put unnatural pressure on your above ground pool cover.
